Following these trends, regenerative medicine has grown as an emerging industry, seeing its private investments multiply by five, and its employment and business units triple between 1997 and 2007, according to a comparative study published in December 2010 in the Jou al of the Royal Society Interface.
Most of this activity—more than a third, according to the study—has to do with stem cell research. This new and promising field, in conjunction with gene therapy, could cure numerous grave conditions by way of living cell-based drugs composed of this type of cells.
The interest of investors and prominent pharmaceuticals has prompted the rapid growth and evolution of this industry so that it may compete in an extremely competitive, sustainable and multibillion-dollar market. But yet, companies are limited in their preparedness to satisfy the increasing demand for stem cells. In order to solve this, the young chemical engineer David Ho a wants to “change the way in which cells are grown to facilitate their production and put end to the limitations in cellular therapy advances.”
To do so, Ho a is developing a technology that addresses the difficulties with mass-producing cells and increases its safety and repeatability. It uses a bioreactor of cultured cells to automatically yield genetically modified cells. The system presents a reiterative method of cell harvesting that allows for its complete automation and eliminates the need for human intervention in washing or removing the non-adherent cells without using compounds such as trypsin, which increases the toxicity. All of this can be done thanks to intelligent surfaces that allow the bonding and debonding of cells based on changes in the environment.
Ho a spent the last two years of his doctoral thesis developing these genetic modification surfaces working with two inte ational reference centers in Spain: the Chemical Institute of Sarria (IQS) and the National Center for Cardiovascular Research (CNIC). The results of his study were published in the scientific jou al Advanced Healthcare Materials. This technology has a Spanish patent, and is pending it’s European patent.
The next step is to create a prototype of these surfaces, which the TR35 winner estimates will be ready in eight months. Currently, he is negotiating with various entities and angel investors in order to raise venture capital for Aglaris Cell, the company he co-founded to move his project from the laboratory to the market. In addition, Ho a is finalizing agreements with engineering firms to secure the fabrication of his device, as well as with “the leading companies in the cellular therapy field” to test it.
And these aren’t the only agreements that Aglaris Cell has signed with companies in the cell therapy sector. The giant pharmaceutical Merck will provide its experience in the field from the technical and market points of view, and Genoma España will provide a grant in order to bring to fruition Ho a’s milestone innovation in as little time as possible.
Aglaris Cell, nevertheless, was not Ho a’s first entrepreneurial venture. In 2010, after developing a patent in his doctoral thesis, he created a business plan that became Sagetis Biotech. This company, in which the TR35 winner continues to be a partner, raised 2m€ last year in private and public founding round.
The Project Coordination Director of Zeltia and a judge for the TR35 Spain Awards, Carmen Eibe, recognizes Ho a’s “highly entrepreneurial” achievements, and believes his project is “incredibly innovative” and “essential to the advancement of cellular therapy.” One of Eibe’s peers on the judging panel and the President of the Bureau of Administration for Suanfarma Biotech, Héctor Ara, also underscores Ho a’s “uniquely accomplished” entrepreneurial profile, as well as the “high grade of innovation” of his projects and his “excellent ability to detect opportunities.”
Ho a stands out for his courage by launching himself fearlessly into a field in which “only very important, pre-established companies control the market, given that the use of bioreactors to produce cells for regenerative medicine or cellular therapy is incredibly new and its clinical validation quite costly,” says Jorge Pedrueza. The Research Director for Ayuda-Le, an association that offers aid to patients with leukemia, also notes: “Aglaris Cell’s added value lies in offering biomaterials that do not use trypsin, as well as its quick and user-friendly technique for producing cells, making this technology more economical.” Consequently, Pedrueza believes that this project “may someday have a great impact.” – Translated by Julia Barrero
